Not a pizza, and better for it

Sheetz Pizza Flatz start at $4.99 for the made to order base at 631 calories, and the finished recipes run up to $8.99. Calling them pizza sets the wrong expectation. They are flatbreads with pizza toppings, pressed rather than stone baked, and they eat closer to a hot open sandwich than to a slice.

That distinction matters because it explains why they work. A convenience store cannot run a pizza oven properly, so trying to make a real pizza would produce a bad one. Pressing a flatbread on a contact grill with toppings on it produces something the equipment can actually deliver well, hot through in about four minutes with a genuinely crisp base.

The range is wider than most people realise. Thirteen builds sit on the kiosk, from the plain Cheese at $4.99 carrying 679 calories through to BBQ Brisket Bacon at $8.99 and 1,136. Pepperoni at $4.99 is the most ordered and sits at 891 calories.

The breakfast version is the one worth knowing about. Made To Order Breakfast Pizza Flatz at $5.99 carries 479 calories, well under the standard Breakfast Pizza at 894, and it puts egg and breakfast meat on the same flatbread. It is available all day rather than only in the morning.

Where Flatz genuinely beat the alternatives is late night. A Sheetz kitchen running at three in the morning can hand you a hot pepperoni flatbread in five minutes, which nothing else open at that hour in most of these markets can do. That availability is the actual product.

Which Flatz to order

For value, Cheese at $4.99 and Pepperoni at $4.99 are priced identically and Pepperoni carries 891 calories against 679 for the plain. Taking the pepperoni for the same money is straightforward.

For a full meal, 3 Meat at $6.29 carries 1,071 calories and is the heaviest thing in the range for under six thirty. BBQ Chicken at $6.29 is lighter at 901 and the better call if the flatbread is going alongside a side.

The premium builds at $8.99 are genuinely different food rather than more toppings. Boomin Steak at 947 calories and Happy Hog at 1,112 both bring slow cooked meat that the cheaper builds do not.

The Made To Order base at $4.99 is the route if you want a specific combination. Every topping prices individually and a lightly topped custom build can come in under the preset recipes.

Getting a better Flatz

The build system gives you more room here than on most Sheetz items.

• Eat it within ten minutes. Flatbread goes leathery as it cools in a bag and no reheat fixes it properly.
